What the standard asks
Grade 6 coordinate work asks the student to graph points in all four quadrants using ordered pairs of rational numbers. Negative coordinates are in play. Fractions and decimals as coordinates are in play. The origin is not the whole story.
A two-minute check at home
On graph paper, mark (0, 0). Ask them to plot (2, −3) and (−1.5, 4). If they swap the coordinates, or refuse to go left of the y-axis, they are not done. Ask them to name the quadrant of each point in their own words.
What it leads to next year
Grade 7 and 8 linear work lives on this same plane. A child who cannot place a negative pair will stall when a table of values crosses zero.
